I used this method to update the SDK manually on debian.

Having worked with Android Studio and Eclipse I would suggest to migrate
your project to Studio and start using it the Gradle build system is so
much powerful and easy to use at the end of the day when everything is
setup!

Studio may be a little bit more demanding in case of memory but works out
of the box at Windows, Mac and Linux (I tested it only in Ubuntu) it also
provides Android Java Doc without the Eclipse nightmare of setting it up in
some cases and a nice UX in UI XMLs and android resources.

I am not sure though if you are facing this problem due to upcoming
deprecation (end of 2015?), you can browse through this
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/16617638/will-eclipse-adt-be-deprecated
for mode details and answers on that.

someone at Google should also write this in capital letter and make a
sticky post stay on the top and redirecting to stack overflow.

It seems the natural replacement is Stack Overflow, but there you can only
post code related questions.
Sometimes you want to bring attention to important topics about non-code
issues, and for that reason I think this group should be more than
adequate. But it is dying slowly...
Maybe reddit is more active for non-code Android topics?

And before they wanted developers to use StackOverflow they wanted us to
use the Google+ developr groups which are kind of a mess to sort through.
And then there was the Android Google group for those who were publishing
apps on the "Android Market". That was a fun group with many folks whose
experience with software development way predated Android (or Palm for that
matter).

I use ADB over Network, because the cable gets in my way on the desk. Since
the device is not being charged while debugging, if I set the screen always
always on, it will drain the battery.

I can manually turn on the screen when needed, but this is quite
cumbersome. The ideal way may be turning the screen automatically when I
press Run App or Debug App in Android Studio. Can this be done without
adding the code for turning on the screen to the app itself (so that all
project can work)?

Well, I got a response to my bug report (
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=191384). I asked that
the link to android-developers forum be removed and a link to Stack
Overflow added. Here is the first comment so far.

"Because StackOverFlow is Not a <Google Forum>, And If a new Developper
Didn'nt Notice by himself/herself that StackOverFlow <exist> Then this
person should Not Developp, This also can be interpreted as a <Challenge>
So don't Modify it"

I guess I should consider myself spanked for the temerity of questioning
the conscience of the king.

I agree with Kris that the responses on Stack Overflow can be less than
optimal, and it takes a fair amount of effort to wade through the chaff to
find the wheat. I think the volume on Stack Overflow is caused more by (a)
changing nature of the Android API (b) increasing numbers of new Android
developers (
http://blog.appfigures.com/app-stores-growth-accelerates-in-2014/).

It seems the five of us have done our bit this week to keep the
android-developers forum alive!

list. Has the buzz moved to another forum?

Thanks,

I have the same observation. However, I don't know where everyone went!

I recently posted to stack overflow and received more and faster responses
(ie no responses from this list). When I google for an android issue, I get
lots of stack overflow response.

Maybe stack-overflow is better.

seems to me that in addition to the traffic volume going down, the ratio of
unanswered questions is going up - maybe that's part of the reason?
TreKing <trekingapp@gmail.com>: Oct 23 03:40PM -0500

Google dropped official support for this forum quite some time ago, in
favor of StackOverflow. There was a post, either in this group or the dev
blog, or somewhere (can't find it now) announcing such. After that,
Googlers (D. Hackborn et al) and more prominent members like Mark Murphy
slowly stopped posting, and the traffic has been in perpetual decline.

Shame - there have been some good times in this group.

Along with this, I think the number of questions that warrant a novel
answer are going down: i.e., I don't as frequently see questions that
ask challenging technical questions that can't be looked up in API
documentation.

StackOverflow's android tag is generally of low quality compared to
some other tags because it contains lots of people asking questions
that could easily be answered by looking at the API documentation. But
SO's model incentivizes people to answer these questions anyway, since
they'll receive points. (Of course, SO as a community knows this and
does seem to care about closing these questions actively, but it still
persists.)

Along with the reasons TreKing mentioned, you might also consider that
over time a large knowledge base of Android answers has accumulated,
meaning that new questions are less frequent. (Possible counterpoint:
the API is always changing.) I think the big reason things have
dropped off is that the most valuable answers were given by
Android/Google's staff, who don't post as frequently. Some still post
on other lists, e.g., `android-platform` or
`android-security-discuss`.

Hello Nathan,

you need to set the DH_P_LENGTH on the server.
Most likely your server is using a too small (512 or 768, maybe 1024)
DH_P_LENGTH which is not supported by the BoringSSL library on Android 6.0.
You can find some more information here:
https://www.openssl.org/blog/blog/2015/05/20/logjam-freak-upcoming-changes/

Best regards,

I do believe it is using less than 1024.

It's not obvious to me how to make the server use a longer DH_P_LENGTH. I
don't see where we are setting it. It is using Java and
ServerSocketFactory.

Perhaps it will just happen if we update OpenSSL. Perhaps we have to
upgrade to Java 8 and use an environment variable. Or maybe I upgrade
Denian.
(where's that intern that setup the server when you need him)

If the length gets longer, will it break all the 4.x and 5.x devices?

However, nowhere that I can find are there instructions of *what to do* so
your code will work with Android 6.0. That should be common courtesy when
Android makes a breaking change.

it does say:

Android is moving away from OpenSSL to the BoringSSL
<https://boringssl.googlesource.com/boringssl/> library

It also gives advice for what to link when you are using the NDK.
I am not using the NDK. What should java people do?
I don't see anywhere in my code that I am referring to either BoringSSL or
OpenSSL. Yet the stack trace above mentions both and there could be some
sort of mismatch.

Below is some of the code. While I am not the original author, this worked
(and still does ) up to Android 5.x.

I could not see any calls here that are deprecated.

KeyStore trustStore = KeyStore.getInstance("BKS");
TrustManagerFactory trustManagerFactory = TrustManagerFactory.getInstance(TrustManagerFactory.getDefaultAlgorithm());
InputStream trustStoreStream = context.getResources().openRawResource(R.raw.iabtruststore);
trustStore.load(trustStoreStream, "IABTrust$tore0424".toCharArray());
trustManagerFactory.init(trustStore);

// Setup the SSL context to use the truststore
ssl_ctx = SSLContext.getInstance("TLS");
ssl_ctx.init(null, trustManagerFactory.getTrustManagers(), null);

//retrieve a socketfactory!
socketFactory = ssl_ctx.getSocketFactory();

Any advice on what to change so that it will work?

the behavior you get or what the problem is.

This is a bug report. Couldn't find a better place to file this too, if you
have a reference to the right forum/bug tracking I'll happily use it.

I wanted to try out Google AppInvites beta.

Not sure if this is a tool (gradle) bug or a Google Play Service bug.

I followed the steps here:
https://developers.google.com/app-invites/android/guides/app

When I launch my release build lint fail with a MissingTranslation on a
generated values string file

The two strings causing the issue are:

<resources>
<string name="gcm_defaultSenderId">[censured]</string>
<string name="google_app_id">[censured]</string>
</resources>

:app:lintVitalRelease
<string name="gcm_defaultSenderId">[censured]</string>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[censured]/app/build/generated/res/google-services/release/values/values.xml
Error:(3) Error: "gcm_defaultSenderId" is not translated in "it" (Italian)
[MissingTranslation]
Error:(4) Error: "google_app_id" is not translated in "it" (Italian)
[MissingTranslation]
<string name="google_app_id">[censured]</string>
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Explanation for issues of type "MissingTranslation":
If an application has more than one locale, then all the strings declared
in one language should also be translated in all other languages.
If the string should not be translated, you can add the attribute
translatable="false" on the <string> element, or you can define all your
non-translatable strings in a resource file called donottranslate.xml.
Or,
you can ignore the issue with a tools:ignore="MissingTranslation"
attribute.
By default this detector allows regions of a language to just provide a
subset of the strings and fall back to the standard language strings. You
can require all regions to provide a full translation by setting the
environment variable ANDROID_LINT_COMPLETE_REGIONS.
You can tell lint (and other tools) which language is the default
language
in your res/values/ folder by specifying tools:locale="languageCode" for
the root <resources> element in your resource file. (The tools prefix
refers to the namespace declaration http://schemas.android.com/tools.)
2 errors, 0 warnings

In my build.gradle file I've set:

resConfigs "it"

The only way I found to build for release has been to set

lintOptions {
// google services plugin is causing missing translation issue
abortOnError false
}

still pretty annoying.

Please makes this bug report reach the right persons in Google or tell me
how I can reach them properly.

regards,
Daniele

This is a group for Android app developers (using the SDK, not developing
it). You can ask if anyone here has found the same problem and how to work
around it.

Now if you want to file a bug report, the right place to do it is
https://code.google.com/p/android/issues

other with the camera2 api, and somehow pick one based on the api level of
the device?

Or, should I just use the camera api?

Which camera api would you use if you were developing a new camera based
app today?

Thanks!

Mark

PLEASE HELP! I am not understanding how I get the mediaplayer to show in
the notification drop down box, I have read how-tos and all that and it is
not making sense.

I have this so far

NotificationCompat.Builder builder = new NotificationCompat.Builder( this );
builder.setContentTitle(getString(R.string.app_name));
//builder.setContentText(mNotificationTextEditText.getText());
builder.setSmallIcon(R.drawable.rnotifivcaton);
NotificationManager manager =
(NotificationManager) getSystemService( Context.NOTIFICATION_SERVICE );
manager.notify(1, builder.build());

Which just makes the app show in the notification area. Now I just need a
play and stop button.

Take a look here:
https://developer.android.com/reference/android/support/v4/media/session/MediaSessionCompat.html

And google (or go to StackOverflow) "MediaSessionCompat" for more info if
you get stuck.

Hi,

Currently I develop the application concerned Camera function for android
6.0.

on Apps Setting, the permission for Camera is disabled.

requestPermissions() is called on onCreate() on my application, i
implemented.
of course, i also implemented onRequestPermissionsResult() as override.

after launching my application, dialog is displayed(ask whether Camera
function
is allowed permission or not)
after allowing, the Task Menu is opened by selecting the bottom key.
after that, the same 2 Tasks are available.

Here is my question.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE SINGLE TASK EVEN IF 2 TASKS ARE AVAILABLE?

If yes, could you please let me know how to implement.

You need to clarify your question. What "2 tasks" are you talking about?

Has it worked before? Looks like a driver issue. Try reinstalling the
driver.

Hi,

Many Google Applications allow you to switch between Google Accounts and
show you the currently connected account.

For example Google Fit, Gmail, Google+, etc...

From the perspective of the code I call .connect() on the Google Client and
enter a loop of
- connection failed
- launch automatic resolution
- get activity result
- retry connect

until I finally connect.
This is documented in many places, here for example:
https://developers.google.com/android/guides/api-client

On the UX side what happens is that the user is presented with multiple
dialogs asking every time something different.

One of the dialog ask to chose an Account between the ones available on the
phone (it probably automatically resolve without user interaction if
there's only one account configured).

How do you query the Google Client to know which account is currently
connected?

I found no documentation about it anywhere.

The closest thing I found is this:
https://developers.google.com/android/reference/com/google/android/gms/common/AccountPicker

but I do not create the picker, it's something completely handled by the
Play Services in the procedure I described above.

Thank you,
Daniele

Hi,

I am facing one problem , related to Video Zoom (trying to zoom a portion
of video ).

For that I have used FrameLayout within that I am placing my SurfaceView.

But for every change :Video is still restricted to the device's max width
and height.

I have tried following things:
1) Changing the layout params of SurfaceView larger than the Screen . NOT
WORKING (Video is still restricted to the device's max width and height)
2) Set the Window flag : FLAG_LAYOUT_NO_LIMITS
<http://developer.android.com/reference/android/view/WindowManager.LayoutParams.html#FLAG_LAYOUT_NO_LIMITS> .
and then trying to make the layout params : NOT WORKING
3) trying to set fixed with and height on surfaceCreated callback: NOT
WORKING
4) Trying to use Androids TvView
<https://developer.android.com/reference/android/media/tv/TvView.html>. by
editing it . Where in the onLayout of the TvView was trying to do the
changes for surfaceView (which TvView is holding) : NOTWORKING.

Other plenty of the options I have tried , but in all the cases it is NOT
zooming the Video if the size of surfaceView is larger than the Screen sizes

*NOTE: *For all the above options, I was trying to remove the graphics
plane and was observing the VideoPlane , I found:

1) For size less than screen size : Video plane's video also re-sizing to
the given size of SurfaceView
2) But when ever the size of surface view is larger than screen , Video
composition is also restricted to screen max sizes and Video plane's too.

I dont want to use TextureView (Where everything like zooming and cropping
is possible) as there is some performance issues reported.

Please Help

Thanks
