Someone pointed out to me that:
https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/3422659?hl=en

"Redeemed gift cards and some promotional codes appear on your account as
part of your Google Play balance
<https://support.google.com/googleplay/topic/3421699/>. Other promotional
codes give you access to specific apps and digital content, and the
download will be automatically added to your library after you redeem your
code."

So how do I create these other promotional codes that give access to
specific apps and digital content?

I'm guessing only the Google Play team can.

According to my best understanding, it is still not possible to offer
discount codes for your paid app in Google Play.

Ie, a code that you can track that gives people a discount at time of
purchase on a specific app.

My next question is, has someone found a creative solution?

Could I perhaps get one if I managed to contact the right person on the
Google Play Marketing Team?

Nathan
Steve Gabrilowitz <steveg1701@gmail.com>: Oct 30 06:22PM -0400

It's not clear if you want this discount code to be a limited time offer or
something that is always available to those "in the know". If the former
then you might be able to work something out with a key based system. You
would have the regular free version of the app with 2 different "key" apps,
one at regular price and the other discounted. The discounted one would
have minimum keywords and such to minimize people finding it by accident
and could be unpublished when the offer expired

Limited time .

So I guess it would be a special version with a different package name,
which is never updated and would have no IAP. It's something to consider.

Nathan.
Steve Gabrilowitz <steveg1701@gmail.com>: Oct 30 06:42PM -0400

Another possibility is something I have seen from time to time where
developers put an app "on sale" for a limited time - simple matter of
lowering the price and putting it back when the promotion is over
Nathan Mellor <nathan.d.mellor@gmail.com>: Oct 30 08:38PM -0700

It may be the best option.

Have a secret time when the app is discounted, and only those who sign up
for the newsletter/promotion/bundle deal will be informed in advance of
when that special . Those not so informed would still get the discount if
they just happen to be buying at the right time.

Does anyone know? Does Google or OHA have any terms or policies covering breaking changes to Android APIs (i.e. android.media - not Google service APIs like Drive). Google does have a one year deprecation notice policy for its service APIs, but the question is about Android APIs.

Android Wear folks.

Is there a way to programmatically put your Android Wear in a state that
will not wake up when you move your arm?

Effectively making a sleep or standby mode where it won't come on until you
push a button.

I have a Gear Live and I don't see this in the settings.

Oh, I thought you were referring to things like the Drive, Location, or
Search web APIs. I'm not aware of any terms covering Android classes /
packages. Usually you wait for the newest SDK release, read the updates and
changes report, and see what was deprecated / updated.

We recently flashed the Lollipop Preview System Image onto our Nexus 5.

Some of our apps can be launched from the built-in browser via custom URL
scheme

<activity android:name="myActivity" ...
<intent-filter>

.
<data android:scheme="myscheme" android:host="com.myhost.com" />
</intent-filter>
</activity>

This feature is not working with the new browser in Lollipop, we get a

*Webpage not available. *

The webpage at myscheme://com.myhost.com could not be loaded because:

net: ERR_UNKNOWN_URL_SCHEME

We installed the Firefox browser on this Nexus 5 and tried the same thing
and it all worked fine. And this same technique has worked for us since
Android 2.1 thru KitKat.

I think I'm seeing a bug that is concerning as browser launch is a critical
capability for us. Wondering if anyone else has seen this and perhaps
suggest a workaround? Alternatively, I hope to get some attention at
Google, and am unsure if this forum is a good way to do so.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

I have implemented Bluetooth in several of my projects where the Android
device is the user interface to a custom device with a Bluetooth module
using the SPP profile (serial port replacement). But I want to clean up my
code and make it more robust. Since I expect to be doing more of these
projects in the future, I would like to modularize my Bluetooth Service so
that it does not depend on the client class code in any way. I've got a
Service working, complete with a thread to read Bluetooth data and deliver
each packet of data to the client (which is generally a local Activity).
But my method of delivering data back to the client is by means of a
handler in that client. That means my Bluetooth Service code needs to
depend on the client code. I want to get away from this method for that
reason. The Binder interface when the Activity binds to the client is
fine for the client calling the Service. But I can't find a similar
lightweight method for the Service to communicate with the client (such as
when it receives a packet of Bluetooth data). My Bluetooth thread that
reads the data can post to a handler to get on the UI thread. But then I
am stuck. If I could create another Binder in the opposite direction, that
would be great. The client would just create the instance of Binder and my
Service could call a method in that Binder without have to know anything
more about the client class. But how can I pass a Binder created in the
client to the Service? I don't think I can do it in the Intent passed in
with bindService, because a Binder is not Parcelable, so it cannot be added
to the Intent with putExtra.

I know that Messenger and AIDL exist, but I prefer the lightweight methods
for performance reasons. Is there something I am missing that seems to
make this job so hard?
RLScott <fixthatpiano@yahoo.com>: Oct 27 02:01PM -0700

After I posted this question I found a reference to using Messenger that
seemed to indicate it was about as lightweight as Binder, being just a
wrapper for it. And I have a nice example of using Messenger for 2-way
communication here on Stack Overflow
<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4300291/example-communication-between-activity-and-service-using-messaging>.
So I think that is what I will settle on.

After years of using Eclipse, I'm making the transition to Android Studio and am still mystified by some of what I see. The latest surprise was when I opened a source file to make an edit and saw that I apparently had hard-coded a string even though I was sure that I hadn't done so. IOW, what I saw was:

Toast.makeText(mCtx, "Evernote app not found", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

However, the text was lightly grayed and highlighted. When I clicked inside the text, the line changed to what I had actually coded, ie:

Toast.makeText(mCtx, R.string.evernote_err, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

Which was more like it! Although this feature is certainly very cool in some circumstances, there are other times when I'd prefer to just see what I typed. So what is this feature called? Can I switch it on and off (once I had collapsed the string to the constant, I could not get it to revert until I opened the file again)?

Closing the loop on this, the formats are different because 1.0.3 has more
tags for the data that is included in the dump. hprof-conv mostly converts
these to the UNKNOWN tag. This can be seen in the source
here: https://github.com/android/platform_dalvik/blob/master/tools/hprof-conv/HprofConv.c#L492

The extra tags are listed here:
https://github.com/android/platform_dalvik/blob/master/tools/hprof-conv/HprofConv.c#L76

On the dalvik side they are defined here:
https://gitorious.org/0xdroid/dalvik/source/b7fdbab46f67253caa15f2cc9d37be295239e075:vm/hprof/Hprof.h

I haven't found a great explanation of what all the tags mean.

Hello every one,

As the name says it, I have a series of audio books on android and one of
the books I made was an audio book talking about Apple iPhone, the name I
want it to be is "Audio book: Apple iPhone".

I want to know if this is safe or not as I couldn't find anything too clear
out there on the internet.

According to android brand guidelines:
http://developer.android.com/distribute/tools/promote/brand.html
They talk about that android should not be main name of the app and it
should not have the focus on the app icon, I assume these rules applies to
most if not all other brands.

According to Apples brand guidelines:
https://www.apple.com/legal/intellectual-property/guidelinesfor3rdparties.html

2. Compatibility: Developers may use Apple, Macintosh, iMac, or any other
Apple word mark (but not the Apple Logo or other Apple-owned graphic
symbol/logo) in a referential phrase on packaging or
promotional/advertising materials to describe that the third party product
is compatible with the referenced Apple product or technology, provided
they comply with the following requirements.

a. The Apple word mark is not part of the product name.

b. The Apple word mark is used in a referential phrase such as "runs on,"
"for use with," "for," or "compatible with."

c. The Apple word mark appears less prominent than the product name.

As for the a) - the product name is "Audio Book" and apple is simply part
of the title of what that book is.
As for the b) - It sounds not correct saying "Audio book for Apple iPhone"
since it is not "for", or saying "runs on" or "for use with". So how can I
have Apple included if it is an audio book?
As for the c) - Apple is not dominating here, "Audio book" is, or at least
that's how I would like to see it. But I hope you could confirm if I'm
viewing it wrong or right.

According to Apple, I also should have a line saying the brand is copy
right to Apple and iPhone is brand name in the description, which I can add
it easily.

Has any one encountered similar question and know the answer, and if it is
OK with the guidelines to have it named like that without the risk of being
suspended.

Hi all,
i just need some clarification about the best way to design a multi-pane
layout for my app.

More in datail, i'm just interesting in understand how is the better way to
let the fragments communicate with their parent activity.

Accordingly to what described here
http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/multi-pane-layouts.html
<http://developer.android.com/design/patterns/multi-pane-layouts.html> and
here http://developer.android.com/training/basics/fragments/fragment-ui.html, i've
designed my UI with the following structure:
- a main activity (let say: A_MAIN)
- a list fragment (F_LIST) and its related activity (A_LIST)
- a detail fragment (F_DET) and its related activity (A_DET)
- an edit fragment (F_EDIT) and its related activity (A_EDIT)

Moreover, each fragment
- defines an interface (OnFragmentInteractionListener) to send the user
action to its parent
- participates to the the action bar with the supported actions

and the main activity (A_MAIN) implements the listener for all fragments
and has the following layouts:
- for smartphone (default), it contains only the F_LIST fragment. When an
item of the list is selected, it starts the A_DET with the F_DET fragment
for the selected item
- for tablet (sw600dp), it contains the F_LIST and F_DET fragments. When
an item of the list is selected, it refreshes the F_DET for the selected
item

The issue is that the parent activity for F_DET could be both A_MAIN or
A_DET hence, in the smartphone scenario, i've some difficulties to send the
listener action to the A_MAIN because it is two levels back (F_DET -> A_DET
-> A_MAIN)...

Where i'm wrong?

(To better clarify, i just want the same interaction behavior of gMail app
when select an email...)

I wait for your help and advice.

Regards
Sergio

I have two activities in my app (a login activity and a map view) and I
would like to recreate the state of the latter when returning from the
former. Yet all the settings on the objects of the view seem to have no
effect like the handle to them were lost.

I perform the findViewById's in onStart and I personalize the view in
onResume. The first time I get there, everything shows fine,; after going
back and returning, the view appears pristine, the control passes through
all the instructions of the onStart and of the onResume, put nothing
happens on my view.

Did I miss something important or what?!

Android KitKat has a fairly stable version of wpa_supplicant already built
into it. It is what Wifi-Direct (and all Wifi) is based on. All of the
documentation for the open source project (non-Android) version of
wpa_supplicant has been seen to apply to the Android one. The source code
for the Android version can be found in platform/external/wpa_supplicant_8:

Java support is available through android.net.wifi.p2p:

Hey, sorry for the slow reply, but for future reference, you can do Double
Shift (Search Everywhere) or CTRL+SHIFT+A (or whatever the Ubuntu
equivalent is) (Actions), and search for "Reset Font Size", then select the
entry in the list.

I accidentally switch the font size on Macbook somehow all the time, which

Hi all

I'm seeking help on supporting multiple screens / devices

background
----------------
I have an app in early development, that works and is full screen for a
Galaxy Tab 10" tablet.
But when I run the same app on a Galaxy Note 3 phone
The screen overflows the phone's display.

Buttons that appear on the bottom right corner of the tablet are not visible on the phone.
Even though the phone has a larger screen resolution, but obviously a physically smaller screen.

The app targets KitKat or newer, so no old api support is needed.

Questions
-------------

Besides designing for different screen densities is there a way to design a single screen for multiple screen sizes / densities ?
How do you detect the devices screen density / size to know which display or layout to use ?

I physically have a tablet that I can test to. But I don't have a Note 3 phone to test on.
How can I make the emulator be a note 3 phone to tested between physical tablet and emulated phone ?

Thanks in advance

I am trying to implement P2P video streaming from IP Camera to Android.
Anyone can suggest me a good P2P library that can be used for peer to peer
streaming from IP camera to Android App ?

<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/26484949/how-to-pause-resume-video-recording-using-mediacodec?noredirect=1#>

Actually I want to implement pause/resume feature for recording video. I
have taken the code from CameraCaptureActivity of Grafika(
https://github.com/google/grafika) and able to record video with the help
of MediaCodec and MediaMuxar.

My question is very much similar to Pause/Resume MediaCodec
<http://stackoverflow.com/questions/21018578/pause-resume-mediacodec>. The
accepted answer quotes that "See the CameraCaptureActivity in Grafika(
https://github.com/google/grafika), which leaves the encoder alive across
activity restarts. If you don't want to have a pause in the video during
the restart, you'll need to keep track of how long encoding was paused, and
then adjust the timestamps being fed into the muxer".

Can anybody suggest example on how to adjust timestamps for MediaCodec
video capture so that I can implement pause/resume feature.

Any help or suggestion will be well appreciated.

*Note* My application is going to target Android 4.3+ (API 18).

I'm working with a client that has a large number of apps published to the
Play store and I'd like to get aggregated statistics like daily user
installs/uninstalls and total installs, across all apps. Right now the
only way to do this seems to be to export each app's stats into a CSV file
and manually combine them.

Has anybody developed a script to do this that they could share, or are you
aware of service that offers this? Thanks.

Hi!

On your Android Studio or File menu (I have a Mac here, not Linux, not sure
how or where is it).
Preferences or Settings (sometimes they change name too, not sure if this
is the case)
Find "Appearence" under IDE Settings
Mark "Override default fonts by (not recommended)"
Choose whatever you want. Apply or Ok

If that's what didn't work for you try this one:

Preferences
Find "Editor" under IDE Settings
Choose desired Size
Look for the "Save as..." button
Create a new color scheme.
Select the new profile on the dropbox menu, if it's not selected already.
Apply or Ok

I hope one of them works for you.

Check the View Menu, and make sure you're not in Presentation Mode.

I tried the settings before, didn't work. I deleted the workspace, now the
font is back to normal.

This is probably a simple If Android Wear needs a location, one way to do it is to contact the mobile app counterpart and request a location and send it back to the wear device.

But I was wondering, could one use GoogleApiClient on the wear device and request the location? I assume it would make the same round trip, if necessary, but might have the data already.

In other words, could I get the location via connecting a location client and calling this method?

Location getLastLocation (GoogleApiClient
<https://developer.android.com/reference/com/google/android/gms/common/api/GoogleApiClient.html>
client)

Or am I oversimplifying it?

Hi friends,

i am implementing json data decryption in android using AES-256, ECB mode.
In these server implementation is done in php using Rijndael encryption*
with 24 digit key and 32 digit initial vector,ECB mode.If i implement with
this key and initial vector in client i got Exceptions saying ECB mode
doesn't support IV(initial vector),If i change ECB mode to CBC mode it is
saying "IV length must be 16 bytes o*nly."

Please guide me how can i decrypt data in android using AES-256 algoritham.

Thanks in advance.
