    Hi,

    You might be. However, the rooted device will be needed for accessing the
    bluez through NDK.

    Intent intent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(),
    YourFirstActivity.class);
    intent.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);

    Trying to figure out how to create, modify, and delete the desktop
    shortcut folders that are new to ICS. I've found examples on how to
    create application shortcuts (of course), but I can't find any
    information on how to work with the new ICS folders. Anyone have any
    idea?

    I would expect that the "com.android.launcher.action.INSTALL_SHORTCUT"
    intent action would be used, but I have no idea where to go from
    there, as that works with application shortcuts, not folders...

    Thanks in advance!

    I´d rather to backup my app data in a separated file instead of let
    this feature in users hands.

    My indecision at this moment lies basically on these ways:

    1 - Just get a copy of my app .db file.
    I think this is not so good because whenever my data structure
    changes in any upgrade, my backup´s lost.
    2 - Generate a text file, anything like CSV.
    By this way the structure data control should be done manually.
    3 - Generate a JSON string of all data into a file.
    Better structure data control.
    4 - Serialize my data and objects into a file.
    Better structure data control.

    Which one do you think is the best way, or even, anyone of you has a
    better way to backup my app data?

    Thanks in advance.

    I would like to know how to get the content of a SMS when the user hit the

    Thank you.

    Recently I was advised by Apple that people who are non developers, that is
    to say, those who have not registered with Apple as iOS Developers, have
    not entered into any of the developer agreements with Apple and so are not
    permitted to use the "*Available on the AppStore*" badges or graphics to
    promote apps.

    However, Amazon Support has advised me that I...

    "can provide badges to the third parties who are not developers but who will promote the apps you're creating once they are published in the Amazon Appstore."

    I've reviewed all the comparable information about branding on the Android site (see following link) and have no idea what their position is on this question.

    http://www.android.com/developers/branding.html

    I emailed Google about this matter, of course without reply.

    Any one have any idea what their position might be?

    Dear All,

    I'm currently learning how to use C2DM. But I still got confused about
    concept of "sender" and "client login".

    *# The sender*
    Do I have to create an email account e.g. ichsan.myapp@gmail.com? It seems
    that one email is for one app only (e.g. package = ichsan.myapp). Is it
    true?

    *# Client login*
    How to create client login? Google says that I should use OAuth 2. But I
    still failed to use it. This is my steps. Would you please check if they're
    correct?

    I log out from my personal email and log in as ichsan.myapp@gmail.com.

    1. Create a client ID
    Since my application server is going to push message into Google C2DM
    server, I create a client id for my application server. I go to
    https://code.google.com/apis/console to create a client. This client type
    is "Installed Application". I get a client ID = CLNT123

    2. Open C2DM service.
    Sadly I cannot find it. I skip this part. Is it Okay?

    3. Testing
    # Getting a token
    curl -k -d
    "response_type=code&client_id=CLNT123&scope=https://www.googleapis.com/c2dm&redirect_uri=urn:ietf:wg:oauth:2.0:oob"
    https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth

    But I got redirect (so I run it in browser instead). Should my application
    server follow that redirect to get the token? How long I a valid token last?
    I got token TOKEN123

    # Push a message
    As my app started and registered itself using ichsan.myapp@gmail.com as
    sender, I got error: Can not find the API. I'm sure I've download all
    libraries available for Android 2.2 and 4.0. Did I miss something?

    If this succeed, is the following snippet the correct way to test pushing a
    message?

    curl -k -H "Authorization: Bearer TOKEN123" --trace curl_trace.txt -d
    "registration_id=GENERATED_MYAPP_REG_ID" -d "data.message=something to
    talk" -d collapse_key=0 https://android.apis.google.com/c2dm/send

    Thanks

    I have an accessibility service as described here:
    http://developer.android.com/training/accessibility/service.html

    I would like to create tests for my service. Since my service reads
    window content using AccessibilityNodeInfo objects, I'm most
    interested in testing that it does the right thing with screen
    changes. As far as I can tell, a regular ServiceTestCase won't work
    for me, since I don't want control over the lifecycle of my service.
    Instead, it looks as though my service is started when the system's
    AccessibilityManagerService binds to it and sends a "setConnection"
    message. I would like to be able to have the system invoke my service
    in the same way during testing. However, when I use test project that
    instruments the project containing my accessibility service, the
    service never seems to start - I'm guessing because running under
    instrumentation blocks the normal lifecycle?

    Is anyone else dealing with this issue? Right now, I can write tests
    without instrumentation - basically I have a test project that moves
    between some test screens. I start my accessibility service
    separately and query it through an external interface. However, if
    possible I'd like a way to be able to run tests in the same process as
    my accessibility service and have things still work as expected.

    Hi all,

    I found a weird scenario which is button in listitem in listview are
    unclickable unless scroll listview to the last listitem,

    after some research seems the problem is occurred by the layout
    Relativelayout1->Relativelayout2->Listview ,

    If you move Listview into the Relativelayout1 it will work fine.

    you may see exactly what happens by download this sample project .

    Hey all -

    I do Product Management & Business Development for the ContextBETA SDK
    at Qualcomm Labs.

    We are currently in Private Beta and looking for a handful of
    developers to take a look at our SDK. We will be going commercial
    later this summer.

    Our ContextBETA SDK (user opt-in) will allow your app to do:

    - Always-On Geofencing (Low power ~4%, far better than native Android
    location change event)
    - Interest Sensing (Allows your app to get the Age Gender Income of a
    user)
    - Image Recognition (Think QR Code, but anything can be the target
    (image, poster, billboard etc)
    - Contextual Push (At a location (50m), At an audience (target by
    inferred AGI), At a time)

    Web-backend to visually see what the SDK can do (can do all calls
    natively as well in-app)

    If you want more info, you can reach me on twitter: @rolandal

    Also, you can sign up at: http://context.qualcommlabs.com

    Thanks guys!

    I think you will need an api from way2sms.co or whichever site you
    intend to use. and i don't think they will provide an api coz, their
    major income is from the ads displayed on the site. So, try contacting
    the website admins, if they agree, you're in luck.

    No, I don't control the server(s). So unless they already send this in
    the http headers. . .

    But I did make more progress on the prevention case. It is failing on
    HttpEntity.writeto. We do detect that failure, but if a partial file
    has been written we might find it later and think it is valid. It's
    best to delete it right away.

    But if not, there appears to be no way after the fact to know that it
    is invalid. I wonder how Gallery knows to reject it.

    Hi all,

    My application using a class extending CursorAdapter. It works correctly on
    Android 2. But application is running on Android 4 I get a NoClassDefFound
    on cursoradapter class.
    I tried to use compatibility package 4 but same thing.

    Do you have an idea to create an app compatible with Android 2, 3 and 4,
    using cursor adapter ?? Do I test SDK version ?

    Thanks for your help.

    yes you are right Francisco we can not install .exe in our mobile
    phone directly. because I am trying to install busybox.exe but it did
    not work for me but when I pass via adb shell it does install it in a
    folder that I create called busybox in data folder. that is why I want
    to put it somewhere in my android application and then push it to the
    phone and install it using some linux commands. so I am wondering if
    that will work. and I agree for the part that the phone has to be
    rooted. for the moment I am working on emulator so I think no problem
    for that. but anybody have an idea how can I install busybox using my
    android application? thank you and I hope I was clear enough and I
    expressed myself in propor why. if not I will try to explain it more.

    Is it possible to you to get a checksum of the image before the file

    So you can calc the checksum again after the file transfer and compare to
    see if the file is corrupted.

    Hi

    My application 's error log in google play shows
    many StringIndexOutOfBoundsException.
    I want to find the root cause, but it's really hard for me. Because it
    happens at render time.
    So there is not any my method in stacktrace.

    my stacktrace looks like this.

    java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException
    > android.widget.LinearLayout.measureHorizontal(LinearLayout.java:732)
    > at android.widget.LinearLayout.onMeasure(LinearLayout.java:342)
    > at android.view.View.measure(View.java:8363)

    ....

    And I can't find supportTabandEmoji in android git repository.
    My TextView's content sometimes has some ImageSpan, but it depends on use's
    input, so I don't know what textview set actually.

    Did some one see this error before? And is there any work around for this
    problem?

    thanks

    koji

    RichardC <richard.critten@googlemail.com> May 31 11:03AM -0700

    Going down your stack trace, the first method I can't find in the source
    is TextView.onMeasure2 and searching Google for "TextView.onMeasure2"
    (without the "") turns up some hits that look like they are from China.

    Do you have ICS 4.0.4 as there were some camera performance updates in
    there.

    Its the nature of the industry to be secretive with upcoming updates,
    nobody will jump ship because the competition are the same or worse.
    Also bear in mind a team of 30 or a 100 developers cannot respond to
    millions of customers little nags. Finally your complaint is about 1
    app being slow on a specific phone using a specific app it could be
    the phone or app development teams with the issue or the OS on that
    specific phone or app and not the OS as a whole.

    I hope this issue gets fixed for you though.

    If it is just a hobby and you make a few hundred, even just a few thousand
    dollars/euro a year, don't worry about it.
    Even if you had to register in the UK and you failed to do so, do you
    really think the British tax service will come after you?

    If you make a living of it, make substantial money from selling apps, then
    you really should consider consulting proper legal and financial counsel to
    cover all the bases.

    If they are all truly CPU bound, probably not, unless you actually
    have multiple processors ( you will on some devices).

    However, processing also frequently involves some file or network IO.
    Those threads will typically be blocked for much of the time waiting
    on the IO operations, and you have great potential for improvement in
    the cycles that would otherwise be wasted.

    I'm with Nathan.

    Multiple threads not only don't make things go faster, unless there are
    actually multiple processors (and, btw, there may well be...) it can easily
    make them go slower. Multiple threads just allow things to happen out of
    order. They are useful only if there are resources available to apply to
    some task that are not being used, because that task is ordered behind some
    other task.

    Hi all,

    I know ACTION_PACKAGE_ADDED is sent for a newly installed package and
    ACTION_PACKAGE_REMOVED for an uninstalled one. However, I'm trying to
    figure out which broadcast Intents to expect when a package is
    upgraded (as in from the Market).

    When replacing an already installed package with a new version from
    Eclipse during development I get ADDED followed by REMOVED. Is that
    the case though when user upgrades from Android Market? Reading
    Intent docs I see ACTION_PACKAGE_REPLACED which looks like a good
    candidate, but REMOVED and FULLY_REMOVED documentation seems to
    suggest one should check EXTRA_REPLACING and (or?) EXTRA_DATA_REMOVED
    to figure it out.

    I'm asking here as I don't currently have a way of testing this and
    googling gives me nothing remotely on-topic this time around.

    Thanks in advance!

    I've confirmed it happens in 3.2 as well.

    Any advice for finding out if a bitmap is corrupt instead of silently
    failing and wasting a user's time?

    Oops, something went wrong.
    Something bad happened. Don't worry, though. The Spreadsheets Team has
    been notified and we'll get right on it.

    I have been getting this for 3 days now when I go to submit. Also the
    submit button is gone from firefox. I can see it in chrome.

    Hello Bhaumik Thaker,

    You need execute the code in a thread.

    For example use asynctask and update the UI thread if required.
    You may need to use Handler on main thread to execute async task so that it
    works in 4.x version and lower versions.

    Do you have more information on this problem? I tried to reproduce it and
    could not do so. The following works as I would expect, parsing correct
    XML and generating error messages on malformed XML on emulators running ICS
    (4.0.4) and HC (3.2).

    I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and I'm playing back some video on it.

    It is very laggy, and I'm seeing this in the log:

    AwesomePlayer - on video lag update

    Can someone help me understand what is going on here?

    The video I'm playing is nothing special, and I don't see why it should lag.

    Correct me if I am wrong folks, any encryption key and method that
    would be used to decrypt resource files would be obfuscated by
    Proguard, assuming the key is kept in the Java source, no?
    So OP would use key-and-method to encrypt resource files in the
    development environment and package the encrypted resource files with
    the apk. At runtime, extract the resource, decrypt using the key and
    go.

    BTW, this:
    > Download them from the Internet only on demand, and only ever hold them in RAM.
    doesn't help much. The URLs of resource files could easily be packet-
    sniffed when the device is running on WiFi, and used to milk the
    resource files off of the OP's web server.

    Asking in itself isn't bad. But it's just silly to keep asking questions
    when they have a standard to not answer those kind of questions. It's just
    a waste of time for the person asking the question and the person who
    answers it with a standard response really.

    Well let's say Google wanted Android to drive the Internet of Things?
    (Oh, shoot I forgot, didn't they say they wanted to)

    With the kind of support we're seeing, the answer is probably: ain't
    gonna happen, though there's heavier reasons that speak against it
    today (and well into the future).

    Anyway, just sayin'

    I have to do some heavy processing in my application. The process comprises
    a series of routines which has no dependency between them, and could be
    parallel. I would like to know if there would be some gain if I start
    threads for each routine in order to parallelize the execution or whether
    it would be a bad practice.

    I wasn't aware of that and yes, the process count sometimes goes up to that
    number (a lot of Binder and AsynTask threads show up then). As I presume
    the thread is not re-created by the system as a handler thread when it
    was killed by it before (does somebody have more information on this?) and
    thus the looper is not initialized, this might explain the issue.

    > ...note, btw, that calls to quit() don't have anything to do with the

    Sorry, I am experimenting with 4 shared threads, each with the same setup
    but different priorities; seems like I have a mismatch in the code I posted
    here (so its the source of on of the other 3 threads). Just imaging
    "sharedPrio" being "sharedWorker" and it should be consistent.
    The rationale of using 4 threads is that i wanted to find the right
    priorities for the different tasks I am doing. Some of them lagged
    substantially behind the others and I tried to speed them up using a higher
    priority. Finally it turned out that the bottleneck is most probably
    DB-Inserts (so an IO bottleneck).
    One thing I noticed when watching CPU load and frequency (with the
    SystemPanel Lite App) is that is that Android seems to adjust the frequency
    based on the amount of "urgent" things to do (i.e. threads with a higher
    priority). So this could lead to the situation that some background stuff
    (i.e. low prio threads) are not getting CPU time although there is work for
    them. It seems to me Android just does not want to increase the clock
    frequency to save engery. Is this basically correct and is there some more
    backgroud information on the scheduler somewhere?

    Hope I got your point here. Yes, I am from a Java background (Web/ORM) and
    just a bit "used to lazy initialization", and thought it does not hurt to
    maintain this practice especially in resource constrainted environments.

    Thanks Mark, So what you are trying to say is if i don't use
    ActionBarSherlock then i wont get ActionBar on 2.2 and 2.3, which will mean
    there will absolutely be no change (ui wise) in my my but when it runs on
    3.0+ an action bar will pop up.

    Now if this is the case what code changes do i need to make.

    None, probably, other than setting your targetSdkVersion to 11 or

    So what you are saying, is that these TAX/VAT issues are too complex
    to be discussed here - with fellow developers - and that each of us
    should consult tax authorities and legal council in order to continue
    developing Android apps - even as a hobby, for fun or pleasure?

    I am afraid that you are right, and that each of us has to register
    for VAT in at least every EU country.
    I am also afraid that this will not happen.

    I am saying that you are better of seeking consult a professional than just
    guess things since there are consequences if things are done incorrectly.
    In my country we are allowed to ask questions to the tax authority about
    things like this. And perhaps even find local groups to ask this to and not
    just hire expensive legal council.
    Seeking council from the local tax authority is what I've done and I've
    also received good advice and information. These kind of questions pop up
    here once in a while and they are never really resolved.

    Ok, so I see a very big error, but don't know how to fix it

    On my class declaration , im using wrong cast??

    //public class Tab2Fragment extends Fragment { //primera pregunta, l
    public class Tab2Fragment extends FragmentActivity {

    Im using FragmentActivity

    But I should be really using Fragment

    But if i do just this change all my code won't work, so how to adapt it for
    using only Fragment?

    thanks a lot!

    Hi,
    I am opening the camera using this code

    camera = Camera.open(); // <8>
    Camera.Parameters parameters = camera.getParameters();
    camera.setDisplayOrientation(90);
    parameters.setZoom(16);
    parameters.setPictureFormat(PixelFormat.JPEG);
    camera.setParameters(parameters);

    But when I save a photo to the sdcard its saved as landscape. Here is my
    save code.

    PictureCallback jpegCallback = new PictureCallback() {
    public void onPictureTaken(byte[] data, Camera camera) {
    FileOutputStream outStream = null;
    boolean mExternalStorageAvailable = false;
    boolean mExternalStorageWriteable = false;
    String state = Environment.getExternalStorageState();
    if (Environment.MEDIA_MOUNTED.equals(state)) {
    // We can read and write the media
    mExternalStorageAvailable = mExternalStorageWriteable = true;
    Log.d(TAG, "Can Write ");
    try {
    String baseDir =
    Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath();
    String fileName = "/" + System.currentTimeMillis() + ".jpg";

    Log.d(TAG, "File: " + baseDir + fileName);
    outStream = new FileOutputStream(baseDir + fileName);
    outStream.write(data);
    outStream.close();
    Log.d(TAG, "onPictureTaken - wrote bytes: " + data.length);
    } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    } catch (IOException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    } finally {
    }
    } else if (Environment.MEDIA_MOUNTED_READ_ONLY.equals(state)) {
    // We can only read the media
    mExternalStorageAvailable = true;
    mExternalStorageWriteable = false;
    Log.d(TAG, "Cant Write ");
    } else {
    // Something else is wrong. It may be one of many other states, but all
    we need
    // to know is we can neither read nor write
    mExternalStorageAvailable = mExternalStorageWriteable = false;
    Log.d(TAG, "Other Error ");
    }
    }
    };

    How can I save the photo as portrait on the sdcard ?

    Thanks in advance

    ConvertView is used. What else to optimize?
    Profile the part that is slow is a great answer.

    I suggest that, put obfuscated icon resources into your APK file, then
    recovers it at run-time.

    You may need to write some tool to obfuscates your icons when create APK
    file, and add some codes in your application to recover those icons.

    Or decompile the APK, find the encryption algorithm and key, and
    decrypt the images.

    that's right, as (I forgot) the OP said this would have to be done

    Hi Developers,

    I have an app developed for 2.2+. This app has menu options. Now on 4.X i
    get a compatibly menu button. Now after including action bar i am not sure
    how the app should behave.

    I change my app and set targetSdkVersion to 14 with proper min version and
    include the support jar. Add action bar. Now on 3.0+ i should get an action
    bar but on 2.2 and 2.3 should i get an action bar + menu button working or
    there will be no action bar and only menu button (which basically mean
    there is no change for 2.2 and 2.3 whatsoever)

    Thanks

    You will not get an action bar on Android 1.x/2.x devices by setting
    targetSdkVersion to any value.

    If you wish to have an action bar on Android 2.1+ devices, consider
    ActionBarSherlock.

    Use the following

    spinner1.setOnItemSelectedListener(new OnItemSelectedListener()
    {
    public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView, View
    selectedItemView, int position, long id)
    {

    spinner2.setSelection(position);
    spinner3.setSelection(position);
    spinner4.setSelection(position);
    spinner5.setSelection(position);
    }

    public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> arg0)
    {
    }
    });

    spinner2.setOnItemSelectedListener(new OnItemSelectedListener() {
    public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parentView, View
    selectedItemView, int position, long id) {

    > }

    > public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> arg0) {
    > }

    The position, I put as argument to setSelection method is the position of
    selected item.

    Hope this will help you.

    Fragments seems to be better fit for your requirement.
    Use of hidden layouts is not recommended.

    The VAT stuff is also depending on your country. You should really talk to
    your local tax authorities and perhaps even legal council about this than
    just people guessing on/talking how it is in their country on a mailing
    list.

    The problem is with your co-ordinates, you are not specifying them
    correctly.
    Just check them again.

    Hi

    Thank you for the hint.
    I already tried with this and it did work. But when the app runs for
    the first time, it asks to activate the app as Device administrator.
    Since this is my internal project, in my requirement, there should not
    have any user inputs to run the service. So this solution failed at
    that point.

    Thanks
    Kelum.

    Hi.

    Really appreciate your tips.

    Yes I can leave the screen alone and turn off by itself. But my
    problem is, with the light sensor readings, I want to turn on the
    screen again.

    Seems when screen is turned off, sensors are not working. So I had to
    use TimerTask to turn on screen and read the light sensor. If the
    reading is above my defined margin, keep the screen on otherwise allow
    to turn off by itself or by force. But with a Service, screen does
    not turn off until the TimerTask fires to turn on the screen. Once it
    is fired, screen goes off and at the same time it wakes up according
    to my logic.

    But with an Activity this worked smoothly. So my problem is, why this
    work in an Activity and not in a Service.

    Thanks
    Kelum

    Can you see if it is an ordering-byte problem ?

    It's not a useless answer. It's the truth. Google usually don't talk about
    upcoming releases, and that's even if you ask one of the engineers
    themselves, something you really shouldn't do.

    Rob Guinness <iamguinness@gmail.com> May 31 12:54AM -0700

    I am wondering if any commercial Android devices fuse accelerometer,
    digital compass, and gyroscope sensor data to provide a stable and accurate
    orientation result? Preferably such sensor fusion should be implemented in
    hardware, as explained in the popular video "Sensor Fusion on Android
    Devices: A Revolution in Motion Processing"<http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7JQ7Rpwn2k>,
    where a prototype was presented based on a modified Nexus One.

    This video, however, is more than 1.5 years old, which is eons in
    smartphone hardware development. Also, the citation (apparently from a
    Google/Android engineer) in this Stackoverflow answer<http://stackoverflow.com/a/8006832/896660>implied that new devices which fuse gyro data with other sensor data are in
    development (original discussion here<?fromgroups#%21topic/android-developers/GOm9yhTFZaM>).
    That information is also more than one year old, so could someone shed some
    light on the current situation?

    Thanks,

    Rob

    You need to provide more details and possibly code and screenshots for us
    to be able to help you.
    Most likely when you are doing onItemSelected you are not mapping it to the
    proper data item.
    Again, screenshots would help.
